4 Reasons It’s Always Worth Revisiting A Destination

As a traveler, it’s essential to visit as many new places as possible – and of course, that’s impossible right now, but there’s something about being in lockdown that has made me long for travel even more! In fact, I am already day dreaming of when I can get away again when all this is over… That way, you can take in the sights, sounds, and tastes, and learn everything there is to know about the destination. To quote Jay-Z, it’s on to the next one! Jetting off somewhere different is an ultimate adventure because you can’t replicate the first time you experience a culture or customs.

Saying that it’s not wrong to return to a location. Many travelers don’t like the idea unless it’s a place that is truly magical since it won’t be the same. This is true – you won’t enjoy a town, city, or country the same way you did previously; however, this isn’t a reason to steer clear. To revisit a region can be just as rewarding, as long as you are open-minded and ready to view everything in a different light.

Sure, there will be a familiarity that you might not like in the beginning. Still, if you can get over the hump, you’ll benefit from the following advantages. Here are the four reasons why it’s always worth revisiting a destination if you’re a traveler!

Discover More

What’s the longest you’ve spent in one country? For some, it’s six months. For others, it’s a year. Some lucky travelers get to explore everything Australia has to offer for two years by working hard and helping the government. Regardless, you can’t really say you have explored a country unless you’ve been there for years. Even then, there is a ton to discover!

The great thing about discovery is that it counts as a first. So, although you might have ridden on the subway before or eaten the food, you’ll still get to tick a task off the to-do list. Plus, it’ll be something you never realized you wanted to do, which makes it more special. Also, the familiarity makes it easier to get lost without inhibitions.

Sometimes, exploring a destination can be scary since you don’t understand what you can and can’t get away with. When you visit a place, you know how to push the envelope, allowing you to take risks that could pay off spectacularly. We get it – you want the ability to brag about being a local.

However, you can’t see all a destination has to offer in a short time frame. Therefore, whether you’ve been there previously, there’s a hell of a lot to discover that will blow your mind.

Do It Differently

Traveling regret is real. Yes, you finally got around to your once-in-a-lifetime vacation, but it never had the impacts you imagined in your head. As a result, it might feel like a letdown, which is rough. If you’re replaying the trip in your mind and can’t put your finger on the problem, it’s usually because you didn’t do it the way you planned.

For example, you might have gone to all the tourist traps and not once left the beaten track. While an adventure is an adventure, no matter what, there are levels of traveling. Experiential travel is a buzzword within the industry right now as it lets visitors immerse themselves in an experience, which often leads to insight or inspiration.

Just because this didn’t happen on your first attempt doesn’t mean you must leave the itch unscratched. Go back and give it a good scratching so that you can look back on your travels and think, “I did it my way.”

To err is human. Everybody makes mistakes, but it’s how you learn from them and bounce back that counts. In your case, it means getting back on the horse for another attempt.

Give Back To The Region

The world changes at a rapid pace. One minute, a destination is on the backpacker’s guide to the galaxy, and the next, it should be avoided at all costs. If you went during peaceful times, you would have discovered a place that most people haven’t had the privilege of visiting, which is pretty mind-blowing.

However, on the flip side, it also means that a region that once gave you so much is getting little in return. Colombia is a prime example. Before the 90s and early 2000s, it was a tropical paradise that was virtually untouched. Sadly, due to the violence, it became somewhat of a pariah on the international stage.

Thankfully, the nation is back on South America’s Gringo Trail and safe to travel to (as long as you are responsible). By going back, you can show solidarity with a country that relied on tourism and was unfairly treated due to factors beyond the local’s control.

There’s a fine line between traveling and commercialization, yet giving back to an area that has been through hard times shouldn’t make you feel guilty. If it does, you can make sure you do it sustainably!

Evaluate Your Growth

Traveling is ideal for introspection. When you’re sat on a beach watching a golden sunset in a tropical paradise, you can’t help but think about the big topics such as, “how did I do this when I’m skint?!” Of course, you begin to lose that self-analysis once you land at the airport and go back to your regular routine. As a result, you might not recognize how far you’ve come in a short space.

Returning to a place you visited as a youngster will encourage the memories to flood back. Suddenly, you’ll remember the good times and the bad, and you’ll contrast them against your current lifestyle.

Analyzing how far you have grown is essential as it puts everything into perspective. Okay, you might not have done everything you wanted to do before turning thirty, yet you’ve done a lot! Unfortunately, by comparing yourself to others, it’s easy to lose your achievements, as well as your goals and targets.

Revisiting a destination will put them at the forefront of your mind once again. That’s why there’s nothing wrong with nostalgia. If anything, it’s a vital part of becoming an adult.

How do you feel about revisiting destinations? Are you for or against?
