My Curly Hair Essentials for the Bathroom

IMG_7650

Curly Hair Essentials – they’re important! After living with and struggling to find my perfect haircare products to tame my mane for so many years, I reckon I’ve found a pretty damn good combination that works for me, which totally live in my bathroom and never leave (unless they’re going in my travel bag for holidays). It’s still not perfect, and I still think there’s a long way to go to find my ‘Holy Grail’ curly hair products, but for now, this my curly hair care routine and what I find to be the best products for getting rid of frizz and taming curly hair, and the products that live on my Superbath bathroom shelf.

Asiam Detangling Shampoo and Conditioner

I had never heard of Asiam before and only tried them when my beauty buyer friend wanted some opinions on the range. I went on to try the whole Asiam curly hair range including masks, leave-in-conditioners and serum, but the Asiam Detangling Shampoo and Conditioner are the items that really stood out to me. I now use these on my bi-weekly (or tri-weekly, if I’m looking a bit scruffy) hair wash. The shampoo doesn’t lather up like others, which I find helps to reduce static in my hair. The conditioner is meant to be left in for 15 minutes but I usually just leave it on for a few minutes whilst I wash my body then rinse it out. It definitely feels different to other conditioners – a little heavier and less ‘silky’ if that makes sense, which surprised me as it actually works well for holding in curls over a few days. Plus, the pump and lift lid bottle shapes are ideal for keeping in the shower and easy to use with slippy hands; the shelf I use is part of my Grove Showers set and it fits them in so perfectly.

Keracare Deep Moisturising Mask

I’ve had nightmares with hair masks in the past – I won’t name names but I used one natural mask that took 2 weeks to wash out and left my hair feeling greasy ever since. I’ve since tried a few more cautiously and kinda gave up, thinking they weren’t for curly hair. However, this Keracare Deep Moisturising Mask from Kerastase has totally converted me. It is created especially for for dry curls and coiled hair and contains nurturing ingredients such as Abyssinian and Coconut Oils. I don’t leave this on for as long as recommended, I usually pop this on when in the bath and enjoying a Sunday face mask pampering. I leave it on for ten minutes then rinse off like normal conditioner, and my hair feels soft and bouncy afterwards.

Aveda Be Curly Serum and Kebelo Velvet Curls serum

Having experimented with high end, drugstore and bargain basement brands of serums and creams for ten years, two of my favourite prestyling products that I see results from are the Aveda Be Curly Serum (which leaves my hair soft, not ‘crunchy’!) and Kebelo Velvet Curls serum, which combines Coconut oil with Chamomile and Organic Quinoa to inspire defined, frizz free curls. Whilst I do enjoy hair oils on days when the ends of my hair are looking straggly and dehydrated, I find oils just don’t work to tame my tresses after a hair wash. Now, I wash my hair, then apply either of these (or both!) from midway down my hair right to the ends. Just a little, half-a-palm sized amount and rub it in before letting my hair dry naturally. They help to get rid of static and keep curls in place even when I sleep on damp hair.

Wet Brush and Invisi Bobbles

To finish off my curly hair wash routine, my final essentials are the Wet Brush and Invisi Bobble. I brush my hair with the Wet Brush, when – wait for it – it’s wet. I either do this during the time I leave my conditioner on in the shower or bath, or before I towel dry my hair. It glides through my hair well and detangles any knots smoothly. The Invisi Bobble is basically what is says on the tin – pop it in your hair and it blends right in! Mine are in chocolate brown to match my hair colour and are the ideal solution for preventing breakage in curly hair. You would cringe if I told you about the times I’ve had to cut normal bobbles out of my hair! Using these mean I get no kinks or breakages when taking them out again, and if they get a little hairy I can always easily rinse both the bobbles and brush underneath my Grothe Kitchen Taps to give them a clean.

So, there we have – my curly hair essentials and my curly hair rountine! It’s an ongoing, trial and test process but one that I’m now enjoying experimenting with now that I’ve found the curly hair essentials that work for me. If you have any tips for curly hair, please leave them in a comment down below; I’m still on the lookout for my ‘Holy Grail’ haircare items.
