The Right Flowers for all Occasions

Using flowers as a gift or a representation dates back to 2,500 BCE, when the ancient Egyptians would adorn their homes at certain times of the year. Today, the act of giving flowers to convert a message is alive and well, with the floral industry being worth £1.3 billion in the UK alone.

Any message can be conveyed with suitable types of flowers. Depending on the species and colour can be used for multiple or different occasions.

Bereavement and Funerals

Death is a fact of life and happens to us all. But knowing and understanding that never makes it any easier. The loss of a loved one is one of the most challenging times for anybody, and not much you can do or say will ease the pain. You can, however, show your respect for the departed and your support for the grieving with a special flower arrangement.

Depending on culture, there are numerous species of flowers traditionally passed along. For example, the Chinese give red orchids while the Japanese often adorn funerals with chrysanthemums. In addition, Flowercard’s collection of sympathy flowers is arranged with care using colours representing a meaning, such as a message of condolence and sympathy.

Wedding Ceremonies

Is there any occasion that doesn’t warrant the flagrant use of exuberant and fantastic flower arrangements than a wedding ceremony? The use of floral bouquets dates back to the tomes of ancient Rome, where they were regarded as a symbol of new life and fertility to be used on the wedding night. Today, no wedding is complete without colourful adornments and the traditional bridal bouquet.

But what of floral gifting for the bride and groom? Like most occasions, the colour of the flowers can hold different meanings. Of course, the deep red of a rose symbolizes passion and is therefore a great gift for Valentine’s day. But the white rose symbolizes purity and wholeness. Additionally, pink roses are thought to represent the joy of an occasion. Keep these in mind when ordering or creating a floral arrangement for the special day.

Wedding Anniversaries

For any couple, the wedding anniversary is the one day you cannot forget. Hell hath no fury…. Traditionally, the wedding anniversary is the one day where a married couple shows their love and appreciation for one another following on the date of their marital vows. You may be aware of traditional stages such as paper for 1 year, Tin for 10 and Gold for 50.

While it isn’t in most people’s interests to bestow lavish and expensive gifts every year, many find the obligatory chocolates and flowers satisfactory. Chocolates are an acquired taste because of the variety. But anniversary flowers need some careful consideration, and there are arrangements to match the years. Carnations, cosmos and sunflowers are traditionally used for the first three.

Special Birthdays

Each year we all take one step closer to our inevitable end, and whether we grow old gracefully or not remains to be seen. Of course, not every birthday is cause for celebration, but there are certain milestones where people like to remind us just how old we are getting. 18, 21 and 40 being chief among them. While they may not be the most exciting birthday gift, flowers are still a popular way to say “well done” or “we are thinking of you”.

The various colours of flowers are excellent at evoking emotion and were used as gestures in Victorian times. However, each flower also has a meaning associated with it. For example, lilies represent positivity and happiness, so they are great for any joyful occasion. Gerberas represent innocence and cheers, therefore making them an excellent gift for a sweet 16.
