Pug Puppy’s First Holiday

This weekend I took Sonny on his very first holiday. We had a long weekend away in the Yorkshire Walds; not very exotic, but somewhere different to explore! More than anything, as a new Pug Momma, I wanted to test out what it would be like to take a dog away from home – what would I need to consider? What should I bring? And what will we be able to do?

Turns out I needn’t have worried about things to do. I thought having a dog would infringe somewhat on exploring but really, it just made things a million times more fun. Have you ever seen a pug in a teacup ride? Well now you have! My favourite day was exploring the seaside with Sonny. Not only did he love parking his curly tail in various amusement rides, but he absolutely adored the beach. As a puppy who hates to step in puddles on his walkies, as soon as he was on the beach he was paddling in the waves and running along the sand. He didn’t pay any attention to his dirty paws at all and it was so heartwarming to see!

If you are considering taking your pet on holiday, be prepared for a lot of fun! But also be prepared should (God forbid) anything go wrong. Before I left, I made sure I had dog friendly accommodation ready, a puppy booster seat ready and also my pet insurance sorted in case of any accidents or illness. It just makes sense really – you’d get travel insurance for yourself before your holidays, so please make sure you look after your bubba too. Argos Pet Insurance have a ton of helpful info to get you started if you aren’t sure where to look.

Another thing that I had to consider when taking Sonny away was finding pet friendly accommodation. He is a very small, very well behaved lap dog but most hotels and self catering apartments don’t allow any sort of dog, which made things a bit tricky. In the end, I chose a little farm cottage (not my usual style, but needs must!). It wasn’t brilliant but it did us just fine, and now I guess my need for luxury comes below my pug’s need for a roof over his head.

One of the things I was worried about but didn’t turn out to be a problem was the travel. It took about two and a half hours each way to the Yorkshire Walds from Manchester, and I was dreading having a puppy in the car for so long. However, with his special booster seat installed to keep him safe, Sonny settled down quickly and was good as gold the whole way! What a golden boy. He really is so well behaved.

After a few days away, Sonny was shattered and ready to come home. However I am so sure he had a wonderful time on his first holiday (as did I!). I swear he can smile sometimes, although other people would say I’m just being a crazy Pug Momma. Hey, I don’t mind, I’m all about the Pug Love.
