Savvy Sleep Habits You Need to Try Today

I know, I know, getting more sleep can be easier said than done – but as cliche, as it is to say, it really is so important! Since the New Year, I have been trying really hard to get into a good, healthy and balanced routine. As you might know, if you’ve been reading here for a while, 2019 took it’s a toll on me a little and 2020 is now the year of self-love and self-care… And sleep is a big part of that!

When you don’t get enough sleep, your physical energy and mental capacity can quickly become depleted. You need to start prioritizing your sleep, even when there are exciting things going on in your life. Getting a good night’s sleep may involve some house upgrades, some routine adjustments and some simple mindset shifts. It’s not impossible to get an amazing night’s sleep every single evening, so consider some of the following savvy sleep habits.

Less Screen Time

Reducing your screen time before bed is the only way that your mind is going to switch off. If you check Instagram or Twitter just before you go to sleep, your brain is instantly going to turn to the posts you have just read. Turn your phone onto aeroplane mode one hour before you go to bed. This will prevent you from checking your messages or scrolling through social media when you really should be sleeping.

Meditation

You can use meditation as part of your everyday sleep routine. Relaxing your mind and turning off all of your thoughts from the day will leave you completely calm. Even if you have had a super stressful day, ten minutes of meditation can bring you right back to earth. If you think this all sounds a bit silly, then why not try it? The worst thing that could happen is that you don’t like it. Download a meditation app and listen to it for ten minutes before you go to bed tonight; you never know, you might love it!

A New Mattress

The truth is, if your bed is uncomfortable you’re not going to get a good night’s sleep. You may not even realize it, but your current bed situation might be causing you long term health problems and sleep issues. You need a medium firm latex mattress to support your back, but give you enough flexibility for movement during the night. Switching out your mattress to a high quality one and investing in new bedsheets could be a huge game changer when it comes to getting a full night’s sleep.

A Consistent Routine

Getting into a consistent routine when you’re trying to enhance your sleep is such a game changer. You need to signal to your body that it’s time to rest and this can be the same every single day. Take a hot bubble bath, drink a non-caffeinated beverage such as peppermint tea or read your favourite book. There are so many ways to wind down before bed; find a routine that you love and stick with it.

As soon as you start incorporating these things into your life, you will sleep so much better. If you have struggled with getting enough shut-eye in the past, this will be a huge game-changer for you. Instead of dreading your head hitting the pillow, you can actually look forward to bedtime. Create your own rituals and routines that help to relax your body and mind. Soon enough you will be getting those much-coveted eight hours you could have only dreamt of a few months ago!
