Thaikun, Manchester Spinningfields, Restaurant Review

Thaikun, Manchester Spinningfields, Restaurant ReviewIf you’re a fan of Thai food then one of the first places you should head to for a tase of it in Manchester is Thaikun. Located in the heart of the elite Spinningfields district, Thaikun is perfectly positioned for a business lunch, a meal before a night out at the surrounding bars or a city centre date (just in time for Valentine’s day!). With bright décor, fairy lights and a Tuk Tuk outside to mimic the bright lights and street food of Bangkok, it certainly makes an impression.

I popped along to try Thaikun for the first time a couple of weeks ago, when I was craving something flavoursome that no other cuisines could quite cut at the time. The décor of the restaurant makes a statement and their long list of Thai beers and cocktails make for a great choice of drinks; I went for the Full Moon cocktail, which came complete with a flying saucer in it to represent the moon. Cute!

For starters, Jonathan and I shared some traditional prawn crackers and sweet chilli sauce (which were delicious) and tried two different types of spring rolls; the fried and the fresh. I always love a good fried spring roll and these vegetarian ones did not disappoint – they were delicious! However I had never tried a fresh spring roll before so these were totally new to me. Served raw with salad inside, the fresh spring rolls were totally refreshing and I would definitely recommend giving them a go if you haven’t had them before.

For mains, we shared a Massaman Curry (apparently the no.1) Thai curry and a Nua Yang (grilled sirloin steak with Thai flavours). Both were lovely and I do always enjoy a curry, but my favourite had to be the unusual take on steak (I’m a poet and I didn’t know it). The Thai flavours on the steak were mouth watering and with our mix of jasmine rice and egg fried rice it was just delicious.

At the end of our mains, we were too full to try dessert – which I was pretty gutted about as I do love a good banana fritter! – but I would definitely recommend Thaikun if you are a fan of Thai food.
