Outfit of the Day – “Bohemian Grunge”

Welcome back, kittens!
Today’s outfit is another compromise between summer and British weather, as the dress is both summery in  but dark. In fact, I plan to also dress it down for Autumn 2012 because its black and midi length, which will remain in trend for the next few seasons. Add some black tights, little boots and a chunky knit cardigan and you’re good to go! One updated staple piece coming right up!
The dress is actually my grandmother’s! When I noticed that pleats were coming into trend this spring I was dying to get my hands on a 1970s style pleat midi, empire dress. I hunted the charity shops and vintage stores but couldn’t find anything that really fitted what I wanted – turns out I only needed to ask my Grandma and she let me raid her wardrobe. As well as this black dress, which actually had black polka dots embroided into the fabric that are only really noticable in person, she also had a lovely floral one for me. However, this one is my favourite due to its length and versitility, as stated above!
In order to brighten up the dark colour for summer, I added a copper brown rope which is the perfect colour for a summer accessorie and brown wedges to match. As we all know, wedges are a fantastic summer statement shoe and the brown colour really makes them able to go with anything; the wooden platform also fits exeptionally well with the rustic feel of the rope belt.

To inject some white highlights into the otherwise dull outfit, I added an ethnic looking necklace from Monsoon that created a theme between the white of my headband, the browns of the belt and wedges and the black of the dress. It was the perfect way to solifidify the colour scheme. The headband really is a statement piece, nostalgic of the French Bohemian movement. The cotton flowers really gave a texture to the outfit which otherwise ran the risk of falling quite flat for a July outfit. As the head dress was so eccentric, I kept my make-up fairly neutral to compensate for this.
