Manchester Talent: Mulberry Loves Manchester

Hey kittens! We’re over halfway through the week, it’s now the prekend (pre-weekend) and I’m getting into a holiday spirit by celebrating all the good little things in life. And what better way than to celebrate than to appreciate the fantastic fashion talent that Manchester has?
As y’all know, I’m a keen supporter of the Manchester fashion industry and local brands. For previous stories, check out my articles on Vogue Fashion Night Out, Manchester Fashion Week and Manchester’s fashion history to name a few! However, today’s post is especially special (does that sound right?!) due to it’s high end association. At Graduate Fashion Week 2013 this week, sponsors Mulberry announced the winner of their Accessories Award and where was the winner from? Yep, you guessed it, Manchester!
Graduate of the BA (Hons) Fashion course at the Manchester School of Art, Amy Davidson created unique handbag, briefcase and case design that Mulberry loved! Inspired by cathedrals and gothic architecture (a kitten after my own heart), Amy’s designs not only won her £750 and a mentor for a year, but high praise from the world renown British fashion brand. Mulberry said they were “really impressed by the intricacy of Amy’s work; she had a great narrative running through her portfolio, incredible attention to detail and a beautifully considered use of material.”
And here’s the finished piece! Although it might not be practical (hey, I can’t be the only one that would be worried about the outside world seeing my snotty tissues and pennies rolling around in there), you can’t deny that it’s a beautiful design.

When I asked Amy about her inspiration, she told me, “I love things that are delicate like lace, you can see the skill and time that went into making something like that. The inspiration for my collection came from my travels in France last Summer. I visited a few cathedrals and fell in love with the intricate details found around the buildings and on the ceilings. My fascination with both these things leads me to design a detailed laser cut pattern inspired by gothic imagery. I chose to use the colours black and silver because they are the colours most used in my research, they work best with the look I tried to achieve.”

So kittens, what do you think of this up-and-coming Manchester designer? Leave me a comment below and let me know! And don’t forget to follow me on Twitterlike my Facebook page and subscribe to my Youtube channel to keep up to date with all things fashion!
