Organizing The Attic

The attic in the house is the place where we put everything. It’s the hidden space in the house that we forget we have – it’s out of sight, out of mind. While the attic is a valuable piece of home real estate, it’s also the place that gets cluttered and overcrowded, disorganized and messy – faster than everywhere else in the home. We stuff the old clothes, boxes of photographs and furniture into the attic and promise ourselves that we will sort it all out later, and later never happens.

When it comes to the time you do finally get around to organizing the space, you need to be militant about it! You have to get some of the old furniture out to get it sold, and the best thing that you can do is get some tips for trading antiques so you can get the best deal for it. Before you get the furniture down, though, you need to make a list of ways that you can best organize the attic so that it can be cleaned out properly and you get your stuff into some kind of order. Let’s take a look at some of the ways that you can quickly do that.

  1. Call in the cleaners. If you can’t face the attic yourself, call in the experts to help you! Calling in cleaners will help you to clean out the space when you get everything down from the attic. You can ensure that you have the whole attic empty enough to be cleaned, and then the professionals can get into all the nooks and crannies that you don’t want to get into. There is nothing wrong with outsourcing the dirty jobs – remember that!
  2. Separate it all. When you have all of your stuff out of the attic, start separating it all into groups and you will be able to see what you’re dealing with. Get it into piles, and then separate it all again into piles of things you want to sell and what you want to keep. This will give you an idea of how much stuff is going back into the attic in the end.
  3. Repair. The attic itself may need to be re-insulated, have things repaired and you can even have lighting fitted. This may be a storage space, but there is nothing to say that it has to be boring and empty! A repaired and clean place is going to make storage far easier on you.
  4. Get some storage bins. Everything you have cleared out and put into piles now needs to be sorted into actual waterproof storage bins. These will help you to keep your attic space organized and clear, so no trips and falls can occur!

Add in some shelves. You can add some shelves along the walls of the attic to slide the storage bins into, allowing you to free up some floor space and work better in the space when you need to be up there.
