Things To Consider When Moving Out

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

Autumn always feels like a new year to me – perhaps ingrained in my mental schedule from school days and the new academic year – but it always gets me thinking of new beginnings. New rooms, new homes. Hey, we all need to move out of where we’re living at some point. Whether that’s because you’re moving in with someone else, moving out and living on your own, moving for a job, or for family, there are a few things to consider when it comes to the move itself.

Declutter Your Belongings

A lot of us will have collected plenty of stuff over the years, and it’s always a surprise to see just how much clutter you can create on your own, let alone with the rest of your household. Before you go moving out and into somewhere else, it’s worth doing a declutter of your belongings. That way, you can be happy in the knowledge that the belongings you’re bringing over to your new property are going to be things you need and not stuff that’s just going to end up in a wardrobe or box and never opened until you move again. Take this decluttering a room at a time and try to be strict with what you’re throwing out.

Plan Your Schedule Out

Having a move out schedule is important to stay on track and to know what you need to do and when. This can be a calendar from the now till the moment you’ve moved in and perhaps a week or so after you’ve moved into your new place. Note down all the timings to do with when you need to move and when your move-in date, if it’s on another day. Think about what may need canceling in terms of household bills etc.

Have External Storage Just In Case

If you have a lot of furniture and things that you’re moving over, it may be wise to have an external storage unit as a backup, just in case something happens in between moving or you have too much furniture for your new property and need to go about getting rid of it. The last thing you want to do is cramp up your new space, and so storage units are a great way of keeping it out of sight and out of mind while moving. You may need to store your belongings if you’ve been dealt a slightly sour hand in that your move-in date for the new property is a week or several after you’ve moved out of the old one.

Leave It Clean And Tidy

For the next tenants or homeowners, you want to leave it in a good state because the people moving in will not want to come to a tip that they need to clean up themselves before moving in their own stuff. Normally when renting, the landlord will sort this, but if you’re a homeowner, then you may want to think about hiring a cleaner or doing the work yourself to leave it in a good state.

Moving out of a property is a cleansing experience because it means you’re moving on to another chapter of your life. Who knows what will happen in the next home?
