Turning a House into a Home

Spare Bedroom Makeover with Day bed, teal wall and black and gold accessories

Four walls, a bed and a sofa do not make a home. Of course, having a roof over your head, and four walls is always something to be grateful for, especially in Manchester where we are sadly confronted with the real homeless people every single day on the way to and from work; it’s truly heartbreaking. In fact, we might take it for granted but a permanent home is something of a luxury and an idea to many people around the world that can sometimes feel unachievable. So, we must make the best of our homes, but how do we turn our house into a home? And are there any tips we can use to create that homely vibe?

Personalising

Choosing your own style, and the decor that you would like for your own home really does make it feel like your own space. Not everybody will agree on the colour scheme that they would like in their home, but there are many compromises to be made here, and at the end of the day everyone should have a home that they enjoy looking at. If you have some bold ideas, there’s nothing wrong with putting these into place in your own home. Trawling the home magazines, and setting up a Pinterest board can really set your imagination wild, It’s essential that you are happy with your choices, so taking your time, looking around to see what is on offer, and implementing it as soon as possible in your own home, it’s a great idea. Even choosing which type of mirror you want in the bathroom, and with shelving unit, you would like in the kitchen, can help you feel a good sense of being at home.

Comforting

The feel of your home should be comforting, and relaxing, this is obviously different for each person, but ensuring that your home is a safe space, with everything you need and want to hand, is going to help you relax and feel better at the end of a long day. There are many lighting options, and mood lighting that isn’t too harsh is going to help your brain switch off for bedtime. Salt lamps and all of the different soft lights that you can buy now are going to create a warm and cosy environment.

Something that also comforts me is knowing my home is protected and secur. I like to use systems such as VicLocks Security so I can sleep safely at night and know I’m not in any danger.

Making it work

If you prefer to store your laundry basket in the bathroom, then that’s absolutely fine, if you would like to have waste paper baskets in every room that’s also fine, the point here is that making sure that your homework is for how you want it to, is essential for everybody. If you’re the type of person that does laundry daily, it isn’t going to make a huge difference, but if like the rest of us we need a space to store the clothing before it gets put away or washed, we are going to need to make sure that we put these plans in place sooner rather than later.

Photos

Adding your very own pictures of your family and friends really helps not only liven up space, but it also helps everybody that lives in the house feel valued and appreciated. It’s been proven that children who have pictures of themselves up at home have greater self-esteem. You can even print your photos in a large canvas option, to really brighten up a room with your loved one’s faces. Who wouldn’t want to see pictures of their friends and family all over the walls? Finding a professional photographer, however, will be an investment that you won’t regret, Just be sure that the portfolio is professional and they have good reviews.

Luckily we’re at a point where we can easily find inspiration and communities online to help us come up with ideas for our homes. It’s great to look at what people are doing all around the world and adding that to our own lives. We can also share our own ideas to inspire other people via social media and blogs. It’s really time for being ourselves and doing what works for us rather than listening to just what the media tells us. If you’re not sure, then the best place to start is via a proper Google search. Getting crafty is also a great idea. We can create our own art with tools that can be found easily in our local craft stores, and you would never know! Some people have documented while home transformations online, and impressed the world, just by having a go. So be bold with your new designs and create something homely for you and yours!
