Biggest Pizzas in the Northern Quarter at Walrus, Manchester

I think I may have finally done it: found the biggest (and possibly best?) pizzas in the Northern Quarter. If you aren’t from Manchester, the Northern Quarter is easily my favourite district in the city. Full of quirky indepedant bars and restaurants, it’s brimming with hidden gems and to be discovered – and I think I may just have found one of them on my first visit to Walrus on Saturday lunch time…

Situated at the heart of the Northern Quarter, Walrus is one of the original, pioneering cocktail bars to first land on the High Street. As well as serving a very varied (and really reasonable!) drinks menu, they have also newly introduced a new food menu with pizzas and sliders as the star of their show.

When ordering drinks, I was surprised to discover the wide range of happy hour deals that Walrus have available. For somewhere so super central (especially within the Northern Quarter which has seen some bars getting a little pricy recently), there are  lot of offers to be had and the team there was very forthcoming with telling us about them – which is fab!

My guest and I chose a cocktail each, I opted for the Hubba Bubba (£7.50) which was super sweet and fruity containing Smirnoff Vodka, Strawberry, Bubblegum and Ginger Beer. My guest chose the more citrus flavoured Um Bongo (also £7.50) which included Captain Morgan White Rum, Apricot, Guava, Mango and Lime.

In fact, we were told that whilst we were there the cocktails would have been on a special offer for 2 for £10, which is great news and very reasonable for how big and delicious they were.

From the food menu, we just had to try what we were told were the ‘biggest pizzas in the Norther Quarter’ – well, it would be rude not to! And let me tell you, they did not disappoint.

Walrus’ new Food Menu contains a great selection of ‘Big Daddy pizzas’. What a name! With a variety of meat and vegetarian toppings. They are also available to be made gluten free and vegan, which is brilliant news for those with intolerances.

I chose the Ratatoule pizza (£7.50) which came with garlic and herb roasted courgette, aubergine, red pepper with olives and rocket. When ordering, I was asked if I was vegan or vegeterian, which I think is a brilliant thing to pick up on by your choice of food! The pizza was delicious and certainly a show stopper on a 15 inch base.

My plus 1 went for the new Sweet Chilli chicken pizza (£9), which is topped with sweet chilli marinated chicken breast with spring onions and roasted red peppers. It had a really lovely unusual taste and was a great take on a traditional pizza.

We also chose a side each (although we really didn’t need it!) and so I opted for the new Dirty Fries topped with spicy beans, jalapenos, mozzaelle and guacamole (£5). Again, this is available as vegan and was absolutely delicious. I mean, look how good these fries look! My mouth is watering just thinking about them.

My guest went for homeamde coleslaw (£2) so we shared between them both. They were the perfect accompaniments for our pizzas, especially with how fresh and cooling the coleslaw was.

Over all, the food and drinks at Walrus were both excellent. The team there were incredibly friendly and helpful and I am seriously impressed with the reasonable price range and variety of happy hour style offers available. I will definitely be bringing my mates back here for after work drinks and pizzas!
