What’s Hot For Your Home? 2020’s Best Interior Trends

New Year, New Home…? Doesn’t quite work, does it? But, that being said, the New Year definitely does inspire me to make some little interior decor changes, especially since I took my Christmas tree down last night and the lounge is suddenly looking very sad and bare (albeit a lot bigger and more spacious now!).

Do you fancy doing something different with your interiors, or have you been meaning to get around to tackling painting jobs or sourcing new furniture for months? If the arrival of a new year has inspired you to freshen up your home, here are some of the hottest trends to try in 2020.

Mix and match old and new

We often describe our homes as either traditional or modern, but in 2020, combining the two is all the rage. You don’t have to choose between twee and futuristic, and mixing and matching different styles can produce stunning results. Whether you live in an old or a new home, you can take elements of retro and rustic styling and team them with modern, minimalist touches to enjoy the best of both worlds. If you’re on the lookout for furniture or accessories to add character and charm, check out sites like Shabby Store and browse online auction sites and vintage shops. If you struggle when it comes to adding creative flair to a blank canvas, interior magazines and websites like Pinterest are fantastic resources.

Warm, earthy tones

For many years, cool shades of blue, green and grey have dominated the interior design world, but things are changing. In 2020, warmer shades of orange, brown, red and beige are making a comeback. These colours are perfect for cosy spaces like snugs and living rooms, as well as bedrooms and you can add accessories to cater for the season. When it’s cold outside and the afternoons are dark, scatter cushions on sofas, lay down rugs and light candles. When it warms up, swap faux fur, wool and velvet cushions and blankets for cotton and linen soft furnishings and add vases of fresh flowers or potted plants.

Statement paper

If you’ve been to a boutique hotel, a fancy restaurant or a trendy bar of late, you may have spotted some funky prints on the walls, particularly in the bathrooms. Statement wallpaper is back with a bang, and there are some fabulous patterns and colours available. From rainforest vibes and Art Deco geometrics to bright floral prints, there’s something for everyone. If you are thinking of adding a playful vibe to a bathroom or living space, think carefully about the size of the room. If you have a very small, compact area, it may be best to stick to plain, light shades on three of the walls and use your wallpaper to make a statement wall.

Black and white

Monochrome is an eternal feature of interior design hit lists, and it’s no wonder. Using black and white, you can create a whole host of different looks that cater for all property styles. From cool, urban industrial and Scandinavian designs to hip, dramatic retro styles, you can’t go wrong with this chic colourway. Opt for an eye-catching kitchen or hallway floor, complement white bedroom walls with black furniture and accessories or use wallpaper or prints to add interest to an understated modern living room or study.
