When One Door Opens…

I’ve now been in my house for almost 5 years and I’m starting to go back around and spruce up the bits and bobs that I first did, but now are starting to look a little worn. Paint touch ups, new fencing, little jobs that all add up!

There are some home problems that, while not major by any stretch of the imagination, can become a persistent headache to the point that you need to do something about them ASAP. If you find that your doors don’t open without you needing to put a little force behind them, you should do something about it, as it could be a problem that gets worse over time. However, you need to know what the potential causes are before you can go looking for the right solution.

Door warped by water damage

If you had a leak in the home at any point in the past, or have had doors that have experienced water damage in the past, it’s important to make sure that they are dealt with. Homes that haven’t had a problem water damage remediation service carried out might not be healthy homes for a variety of reasons. However, even if there are no lingering health problems with the home, there are still concerns like how the water can warp your door over time, slowly changing the shape of the door until it no longer fits. In many cases, this is impossible to straighten out manually and requires you to invest in a new door. This problem can happen in cases of high humidity and hot weather, as well.

You have some unwelcome guests

Probably the cause and outcome that you want the least. Tight-fitting doors can be a sign of termites, and not just water damage or damp. Termites eat through wood, as we all know, and it can be difficult to spot their tunnels. However, while they do, they produce moisture that can do much the same as a leak, causing damage that warps the door and causes its fit to change. Calling out some professionals for termite inspections can help you get to the bottom of it. If there are termites, you want to eliminate them before they cause any more damage to your home. Again, this might also mean you have to replace your door.

It’s a hardware problem

The wood of the door might be okay, in and of itself. However, sometimes, it’s the hardware of the door that can experience issues that might require you to fix them. Sometimes, the door hinges have come loose, slightly pushing the door out so that it’s more flush with the door frame. In other cases, the doorknob or handle might have become a little less securely fastened in place. Replacing a door handle is not a major job and you might even be able to DIY it yourself. Door hinges can be a little more trouble to fix and will require at least two people to fix if you don’t bring a professional out to cope with it.

Whether the problem is water damage, pests, or a simple hardware fix, it’s going to get worse before it gets better, unless you fix it. You might even find that one day a door that is hard to open suddenly becomes impossible to open without breaking something.
