Better Home Security when on Holiday This Year

Now that we are finally all travelling a lot more again, it’s countdown to holiday season! Personally, I can’t wait. But I do have one concern when I go away – making sure my home is kept safe whilst I’m not there.

It’s vital that you pay attention to home security when on holiday this year. Criminals target homes that look empty, so try some of these expert tips to reduce the chances of the worst.

Remove Anything of High Value

Having excellent security is all well and good. But it can also help to make sure there is nothing to steal on the chance someone enters your home while you are away. Moving expensive items like jewelry, electronics, and anything that can be used for ID fraud will help. Your best bet is to hire a storage unit in your local area, so you can quickly and easily transport anything. By doing this, you ensure that any burgers get away with minimal items of little value to a fence.

Use a Monitored Alarm Service

Most thieves won’t even go near a house that has an alarm that they can see. This should be the first thing you do to keep your home safe, whether you are there or on holiday. Many people choose to put money into smart security systems for their homes. These work great as long as you have your cell phone with you. But if you’re going somewhere far away, a monitored home security system gives you real-time security features with rapid response from police.

Ask a Friend to Pop in for Home Security when on Holiday

Give a trusted neighbor or buddy a key and ask them to drop by every so often to reduce the risk of a break-in. They can open and close the curtains, get your mail, and even park their vehicle in your parking space. Someone should also have a key in case there is a leak or some other emergency. Also, make sure you stop any regular deliveries, like Amazon subscriptions or milk, so they don’t pile up, saving money, but also making criminals think you are at home.

Use a Timer for Your Electronics

It’s important to always make your house look like someone is there. You can accomplish this by putting your lights and other electronics on a timer. You can buy timers online or at any major hardware store near you. By putting them in your regular outlets, you only need to plug in your equipment and configure the timer to tell each one when to turn on. You can also choose from a large number of smart devices and use AI assistants like Alexa and Siri to set timers.

Install a Smart Video Doorbell

One of the best security products to come out in the last ten years is the video doorbell. As the name suggests, these things do a great job as cameras. They are set up to record exactly what is going on right outside your door. Still, many video doorbells have two-way audio as well. With two-way audio, you can talk to whoever is knocking and make them think you’re at home, even if you’re not there. These have been shown to be very effective at reducing residential crime.

Summary

You can prevent the worst from happening if you pay attention to home security when on holiday. Store your valuables in secure units, ask a friend to pop in, and use smart devices.
