Car Tyre and Safety for Local Drivers in the UK

Now Winter is well and truly here, it’s time to start planning how to take care of your car for Winter road trips in the UK – especially as Christmas approaches and, like me, you will probably be making present trips around the country dropping off gifts for your loved ones. Before embarking on a road trip, it’s really important to ensure your car tyres are in top notch condition before you set off, so today I’m giving you my top tips on how to care for your car tyres ready for driving around local areas (Kirkcaldy or other sub areas) in the UK.

Check your tyre pressure

Something my parents always instilled in me before setting out on big road trips is the importance of checking your tyre pressure before you set out. Your car manual will have a section that tells you the tyre pressure yours should be at, so its important you keep the manual in the car so you can find it if you forget, or even write it down on your phone as a reminder when you’re out and about. I usually check my car tyres every couple of months as part of a routine when I clean my car. It’s good to get into the habit of it.

Take extra care around remote local areas like Kirkcaldy

Finally, make sure you take extra care when driving around more remote local areas in the UK, especially in Winter when the weather can be cold and wet and roads can be slippy. Try and prevent skidding on the roads and accidents when driving especially in the North of the UK and Scotland where weather can be really bad when doing your Christmas present road trips! Sub areas like Dunnikier Park, Ravenscraig Park and Dysart can be particularly bad in Winter, and areas such as Kirkcaldy can be particularly tricky to drive around because of congestion on the road. Before setting off around these areas, I would recommend making sure your tyres are checked by a professional. If you are searching for tyres in local areas like Kirkcaldy, you can check from Point S.

Fill your tyres when at the petrol station

Another habit I got into when I started working away from home a lot was to fill my tyres with extra air when filling up my car with petrol. I usually had to fill up my car with petrol every 3 or 4 weeks and at the same time I would use the facilities at the petrol station to not only check the pressure, but add extra air into the tyres that needed it. I found the back tyres would decrease the most and keeping on top of it when visiting the petrol station was another good habit to get into. Plus, these facilities are free at most petrol stations (they certainly are at the local Sainsbury’s petrol station to me) or cost a really nominal amount to use (I think it is £1 at the Morrison’s petrol station near me).

Take the 20p tyre test

The ’20p test’ is a super quick and fun way to check that your tyre treads are at the correct measurement. The legal minimum tread depth for cars in the UK is 1.6mm, to check this without cracking our a tape measure, you can quickly grab a 20p coin and pop it into the main tread grooves of your tyres. If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured, then your tyre treads are above 1.6mm. This is super important to check before driving around local areas in the UK where the roads aren’t as smooth and driving can be more dangerous, as the treads in tyres really help your car to brake and steer properly.
