How Long Should Household Appliances Last For?

If there is one thing that can be a huge drain on anyone’s bank account, it’s needing to replace household appliances. Unfortunately, your boiler and cooker aren’t going to last forever! Thankfully, for those of you renting it’s your landlord who is responsible for them and will need to fork out for replacements. Unfortunately, though, anyone who owns their own home will have to but them themselves.

One thing that many homeowners aren’t too sure about is how long their appliances should last for. To give you a general idea, I’ll cover a few of the essential appliances and their lifespans in this post!

Cookers And Ovens

You might be very pleased to hear that cookers and ovens usually have the longest life span out of all the household appliances. Most should last for anywhere between 10 and 15 years. Gas ones will last slightly longer than electric ones. If you keep your nice and clean and well-maintained, it should have quite a lengthy life span.

Boilers

Boilers should have quite a long life span as well, as most of them should work well for around 15 years. Again, carrying out regular maintenance will help yours last even longer. When the time does come to find a new boiler, it’s best to go with a reputable and reliable firm to ensure that you are buying a top-quality boiler that is suited to your home’s heating and water system. That way, you shouldn’t have to worry about it breaking prematurely.

It’s important that you find a reliable plumber for your plumbing needs. Someone you could call in an instant and trust with your plumbing system. For this to happen, they have to be a local plumber. There’s barely any benefits to hiring a plumber that’s miles away from your property. In other words, if your house is in Worcester, find a plumber in Worcester. If you live in Manchester, find a plumber in Manchester.

Washers And Dryers

Even though they also enjoy quite a good life span, your washer and dryer won’t last quite as long as your boiler or oven. They tend to work well for between 10 and 13 years. You can help yours work better for longer by keeping the motor, belt, and drum as clean as possible. The hose and pipes also tend to clog up very easily, so you might want to have these checked by a plumber once a year.

Dishwashers

Sadly, dishwashers don’t last all that long at all. Most are lucky if they make it to 9 years. To try and get yours to outlive this estimation, you should follow the manufacturer’s handbook as it will have plenty of tips and tricks about how to clean and maintain it. Ensuring it stays unclogged and clean are the main things that you can do.

Microwaves

Even though microwaves are very small appliances compared to all the others in this list, they do pretty well when it comes to their lifespan! As long as you use it correctly and keep both the inside and outside clean, then it should stay working for up to 9 years.

As you can see, you shouldn’t have to replace any of your household appliances too frequently. So, your finances shouldn’t suffer too much unless any damages mean that you need to replace an appliance suddenly. As long as you budget for new ones correctly, though, you won’t be too surprised if you do have to change one in an emergency!
