Career Benefits of Blogging

home-office-336581_640

There are so many benefits to blogging, it’s almost hard to count. Apart from the freebies and opportunities (which I’m not gonna lie, are pretty great) there are loads more ways in which blogging can truly benefit you. And I mean, really impact your life, not just provide you with the hottest new lip shade for Autumn. In fact, there are a lot of really great Career Benefits of Blogging… Here’s just a few ways in which I think blogging can postively enhance your CV.

Self-motivation and Time Management

Your blog has to be your baby, or it’s just not gonna work. Blogging takes self-motivation – it’s up to you! Don’t fancy posting this week? That’s cool, but you’re gonna miss out on this week’s readers and eventually people are going to stop checking if there isn’t regular content. You don’t fancy making that press event after work? No worries, but you aren’t gonna stay on top of the hottest news. Not got time to shoot some outfit pictures during your busy weekend? Totally fine, but you won’t have any new photography to write about next week.

Plenty of my friends have started out a blog, posted a few times, and given up and left their blog in the internet graveyard; which is totally fine, it’s just not for them. Blogging is hard work and it needs a strong work ethic to maintain something which ultimately you only have yourself to answer for. It’s cool to be your own boss, but can be tricky, too.

PR and Social Media Experience

One of the really great ways that blogging has impacted me is through the experience of regularly dealing with PR and Media contacts. As my chosen career is in Digital Advertising and Social Media, this is a hugely valuable area that really does enhance my career in small ways every single day.

Myself and many other bloggers are contacted every day by PR’s, Media Planners and Journalist who find my blog and being able to reply to them in a polite, friendly and timely manner is a lesson in communication in itself. Being able to meet with these people, network and stay on top of the hottest trends by maintaining contacts with them is a whole other lesson in creating and fulfilling mutually beneficial work relationships. Whatever industry you are in, the learning curve in communication in this way can be applied to your workplace to help improve work contacts.

Digital Expertise

Not only do you have to keep on top of content for your blog – you have to make the whole website for it to sit in, too! There are tons of different blogger platforms, but I chose to move to a self-hosted WordPress site earlier this year and have not looked back. Whilst it was quite a complicated move from a nice comfortable Blogspot hosted blog, it has allowed me to have full control over my domain, my layout, my hosting and given me the chance to improve my CSS and HTML skills. Honestly, this is really helpful for me and if you too are in any sort of media industry, I think it’s a really valuable skill to have a little bit of digital expertise on your CV. It is the future, after all!

My blog has given me so many great opportunities and looks great on my CV like you said. It’s the perfect way to showcase my creativity and fashion knowledge. It’s also made me decide that I want to work in digital marketing, which I’ve just finished studying for :)
