Christmas in NYC: 5 Safety Tips for Visiting New York City

New York, New York. So good they named it twice, right? New York is the city of dreams, if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. But away from all the classic lines of our favourite musicals and those breathtaking movie locations that make you reminiscent of all those movies you saw as a child, New York is a city where you need to keep your wits about you!

This time three years ago – wow, time flies – I was just about to set off on my first trip to New York for over the Christmas holidays. What a dream come true, right? But with all trips to big cities, it’s important to stay safe and keep your wits about you. In fact, when I was there, I ended up getting my camera stolen on the first day when I was walking around a department store. You never think it will happen to you, but it does! And trust me, spending two hours at NYC Police Department reporting a crime is not a fun way to start your holiday.

New York is fast paced, hectic, stressful and, like most major cities, can be a little dangerous. It’s exhausting and strenuous, but believe it or not, all this strife is definitely worth it. Here you’ll find some straightforward safety tips for visiting New York City, so you an enjoy your visit to the city that never sleeps!

Don’t forget your travel insurance

Just because you’re planning on staying in a posh hotel and wandering the hectic streets of the most famous city on the Earth, doesn’t mean you won’t need travel insurance. Anything can happen out there – and New York is no different. Click the link for reasons to buy travel protection. From tripping on the sidewalk and breaking your ankle to loosing your suitcase at JFK – taking out a good all round policy that protects you is an absolute must. So, don’t put it off.

Taxis

The famous Yellow Cab is an icon and is known the whole world over. However, exercise caution. You’ll see a sea of yellow cabs everywhere you go so make sure you’re getting in one that is clearly identified as a NYC taxicab. To know if it’s an official cab – ensure that it has a light on the roof that displays the drivers medallion number. There will also be an ID number on the bonnet of the car. Make sure you speak confidently to the driver and know where you’re going before you get in the cab. And always tip the driver!

Walking around NYC

Discovering NYC on foot is probably the most popular way to do so. Although there is literally o much to see, so much to look out for and to be aware of that you simply cannot step out of your hotel room and begin wandering aimlessly. Plan in advance where you want to go and what you want to see. Find a route that follows public and main thoroughfares and be wary of other pedestrians, vehicles, crossings and cyclists. You must be vigilant! If you’re travelling at night, make sure you know your route and stick to well-lit streets.

Pickpockets

Like in any major city, keep your possession close and anything of value well hidden. Don’t store anything in your back pocket and consider a purse that you can wear across your body or a money belt. If you’re watching a street performer then be hyper vigilant of who is around you and your possessions as these types of distractions often attract pickpockets.

Enjoy yourself
