Dr Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical at The Lowry Theatre, Salford Quays

Last night, I was lucky enough to be invited to The Lowry Theatre in Salford Quays to see their festive musical for 2019; Dr Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Dr Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical is of course based on the legendary children’s book – and subsequently film – by zaney author Dr Seuss. As a kid who grew up on the silly stories and daft ditties of Dr Seuss, I was excited to see how this would be translated into musical form and excited to get into the festive feeling at my favourite theatre in Manchester (well, technically Salford), The Lowry.

No matter the time of the year I always love a visit to The Lowry theatre, but there is something about visiting in December that always makes me feel extra festive. I think perhaps seeing their Christmas production has become somewhat of a tradition in recent years and so it always helps me look forward to Christmas a little more! Home to two galleries, three theatres and Pier Eight bar and restaurant, The Lowry welcomes more than 830,000 people per year across more than 1,000 performances a year.

Based on the best-selling children’s book, Dr Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical tells the story of how the miserable Grinch discovers there’s more to Christmas than he first thought. Max the Dog narrates the story of the scheming Grinch whose heart is ‘two sizes too small,’ as he decides to steal Christmas from the Whos. The sets and costumers are magnificiantly crafted with unlimited colour and attention to detail, the music is heartwarming and cheerful, and the actors are excellent. The highlights of the cast for me were comedian Griff Rhys Jones as Old Max and Matt Terry (of 2016 X Factor fame – I am a big fan!) as Young Max.

The musical is on now until the 5th January, seeing you right through the Christmas holidays and tickets are available here. If you are looking for a different type of day out for the family – or like me, simply want to indulge in your own festive side – then I would highly recommend considering seeing Dr Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical at The Lowry Theatre, Salford Quays.
