Tips to Look After Your Underwear

You no doubt spend precious time scouring the internet and the shops looking for that perfect underwear set, bra or a beautiful pair of sexy knickers. However, it’s vital to remember that even after you’ve made that exciting purchase, the important work begins once you’ve worn them.

Looking after your underwear properly is the best way to make sure they last, making sure you get the most for your money. Looking after your underwear will also ensure it keeps its style and colour for longer, so that you’re not walking around in ripped knickers or a faded bra!

Whether many others see your underwear or not, it’s designed to make you feel great about yourself. You can do this a lot more efficiently when you know your underwear is in great condition. So, here are some top tips to help you look after your underwear!

How to wash your underwear

Many underwear labels will tell you that the preferable way to wash your underwear is by hand washing. This is worth considering if your underwear is incredibly delicate, as a washing machine may damage it, either by tearing the fabric or affecting the fit. If you are unsure about putting your bras and knickers in the washing machine, it’s best to be safe and hand wash!

However, there are many styles of underwear that will be perfectly fine in the washing machine, so long as you remember these helpful tips. Consider using a washing detergent that is suitable for delicate fabrics, and set the washing machine to a low temperature and short programme.

If you want, you can use a pillowcase or washing bag to put your underwear in before washing in the machine. This can be particularly helpful for underwired bras, as an exposed or broken wire could break your machine!

Once your bras and knickers have survived the washing machine, air dry them instead of using a tumble dryer. The heat from a tumble dryer can ruin the fabric, shrink your underwear or make the colours fade.

How to store your underwear

Organising your underwear drawer isn’t just good for the sake of being organised; it can help to keep your underwear in good condition too. If you have wooden drawers, it’s important to line your lingerie drawer with something first, because wood can snag on delicate fabrics like lace or silk.

Consider dividing your drawer so you can store bras and knickers separately, avoiding a tangled mess that could lead to damaged underwear. If you have any slips or other specialty garments, you could take an extra step and hang them up to keep the fabric in good condition.
