Economical Ways to Keep your Home Up to Date

As you guys know, I bought my first home this time last year and although it took me about six months to get it looking spick and span all on my own, there are still steady updates I want to add to it as I settle in more and more. It seems like the work is never over! However, it doesn’t have to break the bank and I’ve become used to doing things on a budget. If you want to add a touch of luxury to your home, without spending a fortune, all you need to do is to read on. Below are some quick and easy ways to do exactly that.

Hire some furniture

The most expensive items in the average home are the sofa, dining room table and other large items of furniture. If you are on a really tight budget, furnishing each room can be extremely difficult. Fortunately, you can find furniture for hire from Emblem Furniture and others that offer this service in your area.

Buy good-quality second-hand items

Another option is to buy something second-hand. Local buy and sell Facebook groups are a particularly good source for this. If you have a recycling co-operative in your area try those too. Sometimes it is possible to pick up items that are in very good condition, for little or nothing. This is especially the case for big things like sofas that cost money to get rid of. The only problem is that you will need a van to pick these large items up. However, it is possible to hire one for a couple of hours.

Learn to restore or repurpose a range of items

Being able to update items of furniture that you already own is very handy. Once you learn these types of skills you will be able to rework most of the items that you own. This guy’s YouTube channel is a great place to pick up the skills that you are going to need.

Make your own soft furnishings and ornaments

Making your own ornaments and soft furnishing items is a great way to truly personalise your home. You do not necessarily need to be good at sewing or have any other special skills. It is even possible to make new sofa and chair covers without doing any sewing. Often, you can get away with using stick-on Velcro and fabric glue to creat them.

It is relatively easy to make unique wall hangings. Even old ornaments can be given a fresh new look by wrapping them or spraying them so that they fit in with the latest trend.

Shop in the sales

If you prefer to buy these items yourself, save up and shop in the sales. This can easily save you 50% or more.

Check for coupons

Before buying anything, always go online and check for vouchers or coupons. Don´t forget that in most cases you will not actually have to buy the items you need online. Many of them can be printed off and used in physical stores.

Updating your kitchen on a budget

One of the most expensive rooms in the home to update is the kitchen. Fortunately, you do not necessarily have to install new cabinets to give it a fresh new look. Instead, you can have your existing doors re-sprayed and update the handles.

You can also freshen up the tiles using decals. For the floors, consider using linoleum or laminate flooring. It is usually cheaper and easier than laying new tiles.
