Top 3: The Best Lake District Getaways

Spontaneous breaks away can be exciting, exhilarating ways to make the most of a long weekend or to use up a few spare days holiday that are left after your summer holidays are over and done with. You can choose to head abroad, but that can mean lengthy travelling and added costs which sometimes might not be worth it for such a short trip – if you want to skip the flights and just quickly escape to tranquillity for a few days, the Lake District is the perfect location! There are breaks to tailor to everyone’s tastes, whether that’s a relaxing luxury hotel stay, an outdoorsy adventure in a log cabin or maybe even a family camping trip; whatever it is that you’re after, the Lake District has it in abundance.

Keswick

Perhaps one of the most popular Lake District getaway destinations, Keswick has a vibrant, upbeat atmosphere with a little bit of something for everyone. It’s a hotspot for foodies, explorers, and relaxers, so however you plan on spending your holiday, you’ll find it here. Sitting on Derwentwater Lake, it’s one of the most picturesque towns in the region, but once you delve into the activities, walking trails, and fine dining options that are dotted in and around the town, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the go-to locations for lake-bound holidaymakers.

The lake itself can be explored by heading up the hiking trails or on a boat trip, and the town hosts yearly festivals that give an eclectic buzz around the streets – Keswick is a friendly town and you’ll never be too far from your next activity. There’s plenty of heritage to be discovered in Keswick too, as well as a plethora of luxurious hotels brought to you by Lake District Hotels, so you can be sure that you’ll be able to find a great place to rest your head at the end of a long day of exploring, as well as some of the best eats to keep you well-stocked for the days ahead!

Pro Tip: Check out the AA Rosette Award Winning steakhouse at Inn On The Square in the centre of town – their steaks are to die for!

Ambleside

Moving on to Windermere, the largest lake in the district, we’ve got the town of Ambleside, which is a little more understated than Keswick – Ambleside has a more old-world feel and is completely back to basics so if you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, it could be the perfect location. The town is ideal for those who want to visit the UK’s largest lake, with boat trips and hiking trails around the lake all being found in Ambleside.

Those who enjoy looking into the historical roots of a town will love Ambleside – there are old stone houses, traditional bridges, manor houses, and even Wray Castle to explore, so you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Bowness-on-Windermere

This has become the Lake District’s most popular tourist destination, and it’s pretty easy to see why. Between the booming atmosphere around the town, the picturesque setting, and a wide variety of activities, it’s almost impossible not to find what you’re after. Those who are interested in exploring the lake will be able to take a deeper look at the largest body of water in the country by boat, whilst those who prefer to shop, eat, and relax will love the restaurants and boutiques that the town prides itself on.

The biggest draw for Bowness-on-Windermere has to be the huge part that it plays in encouraging outdoor activities – it’s a hub for sailing and watersports, with people flocking from across the country to take part in the events held on the lake. If you aren’t quite an expert in water activities, it’s not a problem; beginner lessons are available in Bowness, so even novices can get involved!

Finding the right Lake District holiday can be a tough one with all of the options that are available, but if you spend the time to choose the town and accommodation that best suits you, you’ll have a great time at a far less daunting price than you’d be faced with if you were to jet off abroad! Whether it’s camping, log cabins, or a luxury hotel, the Lake District can provide everyone with the holiday that they’re looking for.
