My Bedroom: #MySenseOfSafe

As soon as I bought my first home, I started to think about my bedroom. After all, it’s where I’ll end up spending 50% of my time and it’s important to make it feel safe and sound. My own sanctuary. I wanted to ensure it was relaxing, fairly neutral but still had an injection of my colourful personality in it. Oh and enough room in bed for Sonny my pug to cuddle up next to me!

On reflect, there are definitely steps that I’ve done to help my bedroom feel like my sanctuary, whcih is exactly what I’m thinking about today as part of the#MySenseOfSafe project by Slater Gordon Lawyers.

Some steps I’ve taken to help my bedroom feel relaxing (and above all, safe) are…

Not overloading electrical sockets

Between charging my mobile phone, iPad, lamp, camera and more, it can be easy to run out of plug sockets and use an extension. However when I had my electricity checks done at my house when I first moved in I asked for USB sockets to be fitted. I have two USB charging stations built into the plugs in my bedroom which helps me to keep charging devices to a minimum to prevent the plugs overheating.

Turning appliances off overnight

Similar to not overloading plugs, I make sure I switch off anything I am not using overnight to stop them over heating and causing a fire. It’s something I’m really paranoid about as we have had family friends who have been unfortunate enough to have a house fire due to mobile phone chargers being left on too long. Switching off appliances overnight helps me feel safe and sleep better at night!

Asking for DIY help

Although as you guys know I undertook the majority of my home renovations on my own, there were certain jobs that I had to admit defeat to and ask for help. Asking for help from a professional can help keep you safe when renovating your home and that’s exactly what I did when I employed someone to put up my wonderful gold polkadot wallpaper. It would have been unsafe for me to attempt this on my own!

Look after yourself

In order to make my bedroom as light, bright and relaxing as possible, I wanted all the other walls aside from my feature polka dot wallpaper to be a neutral white. Although I can’t wallpaper myself, painting takes a lot less skill and is something I have come to enjoy having had to paint every single room in my house(!) and so I took on this task myself. One thing to remember when completing DIY yourself though is to look after yourself. For example, when painting I made sure my ladder was securely positioned at a 75 degree angle, I made sure to keep my hands as light as possible when painting and to take my time and move slowly on ladders – no one wants to hurt themselves so badly they can’t enjoy the safe space they have created!
