Fragrance vs Fashion: Elvis Jesus Review

Hey kittens, hows ya week going? Hopefully well! Today’s post is something a little different. As y’all know, I like to try new things over here in my little corner of the internet, so this one should be a new little experiment!

Paws for thought and cast your little kitten brains back a couple of weeks to when I attended the Elvis Jesus #EyesWideShut event – you can read my blog post here. Always one to support a local brand, I jumped to the chance to attend a VIP press launch at Sakura, Deansgate Locks and I was not disappointed! From the moment I stepped on the red carpet I was blown away. Welcomed by fire dancers in next to nothing, I walked the red carpet to the entrance. At the entrance, I was greeted by masquerade models (also in pretty much nothing) before having my photo taken and walking into the main venue which was filled with celeb and press alike.

Of course, the celebrity and press night was held for a reason – to sample the new fragrances. A fragrance from a fashion brand – different?! Embraced by the elite style press, fashion rebels Elvis Jesus have received acclaim and patronage from the aristocracy of icon makers, from film stars through to musicians. Today, Elvis Jesus continue their culture of challenging the status quo of the establishment by teaming up with Fragrance and Beauty Creations to create their first ever premium fragrances, now selling at The Fragrance Shop.

So, where do fashion and fragrance come together? Established in 1997 and born from the mirth of popular culture, Elvis Jesus has built its reputation as a clothing brand dedicated to producing fine quality clothes with humour, panache and inescapable messages within the design. A brand defined by its rebellious nature, recognized for its anti-establishment message, applauded for its couture construction. Plus, the brand is based in Manchester and recently opened a store in the Trafford Centre – well worth a visit if you’re a local lass like me!

As a fashionista, I love aesthetics and the packaging definitely appeals to my glamour puss side. Elvis Jesus For Her is presented in a heavy weight clear glass flacon adorned with the Brand’s iconic logo in rose coloured gold while For Him stands defiantly in a weather beaten clear glass flask branded with Elvis Jesus’ pewter coloured emblem. Both fragrances lay hidden in their unique outer ‘book’ packaging – a nod to the origin of the Brand’s namesake. For Her is bound in smooth black with gold, whilst For Him lays in distressed brown with aged pewter, their script documenting the Brand’s history.

For the Tom Cats out there, we have Elvis Jesus For Him (not so inventive on the name side!). This is a masculine Earthy Citrus scent that contains Grapefruit, Orange and spicy Pink Pepper that prelude Black Pepper, Patchouli and Geranium. The lingering masculine notes of Cedar, Vetivert and sensual Woods leave a long lasting impact. I have to say it is a very attractive smell – different from the female version but with enough similarities for you to wear a “his and hers” matching scent if you wish. Although, lets be honest, that might be a bit too cheesy!

What next? Elvis Jesus have this year launched a male and female debut fragrance, both beautifully presented in bible inspired packaging (which actually tells the story of the brand). I was surprised by both. Elvis Jesus Fragrances embody the spirit of the Brand…a play with opposites to create products that challenge the norm. Juxtaposing heroes with anti-heroes, rock with religion and fashion with politics – their construction reflects the Brand’s renegade design incorporating couture detailing. The beautifully crafted bible exterior houses a real rock n roll fragrance encased within the distinctive aged glass bottle.

So – what do they actually smell like? Retailing at £49.00 for 100ml, you’d hope that Elvis Jesus For Her is a smell worthy of your money – and I have to say it is! Although it’s hard to describe scents (especially as a lover of fashion before fragrance), this perfume really is something unusual and is fast becoming my signature scent. With a little help from the ingredients list, I can tell ya that Elvis Jesus For Her contains uplifting Grapefruit, Cherry, Bergamot, Elemi and Peppermint blended with the woody backdrop of Nutmeg. Other, more girly ingredients include Rose, Jasmine, Muguet and Cinnamon which help to give it a sweet aftersmell, finishing with a sensuous woody blend of Cedar, Courmarin, Amber, Vanilla, Tonka Bean and Leather. A Woody Floral scent that truly lasts on your skin all day (and not in an I’ve-just-rolled-in-perfume way either).

To conclude, fragrance and fashion seem to work well together with Elvis Jesus. Although relatively new to this local brand, I’ve grown to love it very quickly and actually cannot stop wearing Elvis Jesus For Her. The products may have changed, but the journey of Elvis Jesus has never betrayed the Brand’s roots in beautiful, individual and challenging clothes for men and women – and now, fragrance too! If you fancy getting your paws on some, they’re available in store and online from The Fragrance Shop.
